The general director of Industrial and Agricultural Associations, Gines Vivancos, along with the general director of Operations and Training Modernization of Agricultural Lidón Ángel García, and Head Official Tasting Panel Virgin Oil Region, Carmen Teruel, today introduced the Tasting regional competition Virgin Olive Oil to be held next Thursday, June 25 at the Center for Training and Integrated Agricultural Experiences (CIFE), Molina de Segura.
Vivanco said the main objective of this contest, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, with the assistance of the City of Molina de Segura and Qualification Centre Murcia Tourist, "is to promote the sector virgin olive oil every time becomes more important in our region, and make it known to the general public. "
The importance of olive oil, according to the director general, is that "food is a differentiator for our healthy Mediterranean diet."
Vivanco noted that "Spain is the largest producer in the world, notwithstanding that there is great cultural ignorance of this product by the consumer."
In this sense, the director general stressed that "the Region of Murcia is an area where oil production is growing in quantity and, above all, quality."
The region produces over 40 million kilos of olives which are extracted 8.5 million kilos of oil in 38 mills, according to data from the 2007-2008 season.
"These figures represent an increase of approximately 20 percent compared to the average of the five previous seasons," said Vivanco.
Denomination of Origin Virgin Olive Oil
The Region of Murcia is in process for the Designation of Origin (DO) of olive oil.
This future will be the consequence DO as Vivancos, "the effort made by the mills Murcia to distinguish a product of great tradition in the region."
The tradition of olive oil and production is reflected in the work place for 10 years Official Tasting Panel of Virgin Oils based in Molina de Segura CIFE.
This agency of the Ministry is composed of 18 tasters trained to classify and describe the oil produced in the region.
Award Winners
The Oil Tasters contest, which recognizes the best taster of virgin olive oils, is aimed at professional tasters, restaurants and individuals.
The first three winners will receive a special trophy.
The top finishers will have the opportunity to compete in the final of Jaén on 26 September with 30 other tasters finalists from each of the semifinals in Spain, specifically in La Rioja, Castilla-La Mancha and the same Jaén.
The winner will be awarded a prize of 4,000 euros, the runner will be $ 1,000 and the third batch of products.
