The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (Mapama), will invest 965,000 euros, through the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura, in the environmental recovery project of the Segura river in the section between Soto de la Hijuela and Soto de los Poplars in Molina de Segura.
The action will recover this section, about 4 kilometers long, where currently the canes (Arundo donax) proliferate, an invasive species that is degrading the river banks in a remarkable way.
Specifically, the work aims to improve the ecological status of the Segura River, avoid water losses caused by the high evapotranspiration of the cane and regenerate the riverside forest as a CO2 sink in order to counteract the emissions.
In addition, they will permanently eliminate the invasive species in this section as well as gain a recreational space for society that allows the approach of citizens to their rivers.
This project will also provide continuity to the work carried out by the Molina de Segura Town Council in two stretches of riverbank forest that will be connected with this action.
The work to be carried out will consist, as a priority, in the permanent elimination of the canes and the planting of native arboreal, shrub and herbaceous species, to consolidate the habitat of the fauna associated with these riparian spaces.
PIMA Adapta Agua Plan
This project is part of the Plan to promote the Environment for Adaptation to Climate Change (PIMA-Adapta), which aims to adapt the different water bodies to the effects on them and on the animal and plant species that depend on them. having climate change.
