The presentation ceremony for the Study of Childhood Obesity Prevalence in Molina de Segura was held on Wednesday 17 February, chaired by the Mayor of the town, Eduardo Contreras Linares, together with the Managing Director of Primary Care Area VI, Thomas Salvador Fernández Pérez, the two coordinators of the Department of Health, Juan Francisco Menéndez Macanás Puche and Emilio Perez, and the Councillor for Health, Lola Vicente Quiles.

The study, presented by pediatrician Dr. Francisco J.

Monsó Pérez-Chirinos, reveals that 1 in 4 children in Molina de Segura presents an overweight and 1 in 6 is obese, which can pose a serious health problem in the future.

The resulting figure of childhood obesity was 16.3% and that of obesity and overweight cumulative 26.9%.

To perform the study were weighed and measured a total of 6,139 children aged 3 to 12 years (nursery and primary) of all schools in the municipality (24 centers, 13 with and 11 without high school cafeteria) what has determined that this study is one of the major anthropometric studies conducted in Spain.

We have also proved that the higher prevalence of obesity in children is given Molina (17.8%) compared with boys (14.8%) and that obesity increases with increasing age of the children.

With regard to schools, we have obtained very different figures depending on whether the school is private, private or public, with obesity data only 8.8% in private schools, which shows the relationship between obesity and socioeconomic status of the population.

Similarly, the difference was found between high schools and colleges with no dining room, with a higher obesity among children who eat at home to those who attend high school.

Molina de Segura, 35% of children attend high school daily (compared with 20% nationally) and with the introduction of healthy menus, is promoting the Mediterranean diet and daily consumption of salads, traditional dishes and fruit.

In terms of obesity and immigration, are noted higher rates of obesity in immigrant children.

Molina de Segura has been developing over the last 4 years a Childhood Obesity Prevention with the participation of City Hall, Health Centers, the Health Ministry and the Ministry of Education, with the collaboration of all the schools in the municipality.

At the same time, they are devising strategies to promote physical activity for children to avoid the big problem of inactivity.

In the coming years will be re anthropometric studies for monitoring the prevalence of obesity and overweight and the impact of actions carried out through the Obesity Prevention Program.
