"More riparian forest of Molina del Segura" (06/02/2010)

The Southeastern Association of Naturalists (ANSE), with funding from the company Carchemish and in collaboration with the Department of Environment of the City of Molina del Segura has reforested mile Segura River as it passes through Molina del Segura.

The performances, which have permission of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura, seek to recover the gallery forest or riparian vegetation type almost disappeared, but vital for the maintenance of biodiversity in the watershed.

From this Saturday, hundreds of white poplar (Populus alba) repopulate the banks of the Segura River as it passes through Molina del Segura, particularly in the thicket of Hijuela and thanks to a project funded by the company's recycling cartridges print "Carchemish."

Through this initiative are intended to offset the emissions of greenhouse gases by reclamation of native vegetation.

The planting will be done by the workers of the company advised by the Association of Naturalists in the Southeast and with the assistance of the City of Molina del Segura, who has been working in the Segura river restoration for ten years.

In addition, the project has been authorized by the Segura River Basin to develop hydraulic public domain.

The white poplar is a tree of rapid growth and moisture-loving forest was along the banks of the River Segura.

These formations are called gallery forests or riverine and develop an important ecological function in the river, providing many services such as shelter for wildlife, erosion control, reduction of water pollution, floods and damping much more.

However, the advancement of agriculture and action in the channels (channeling) have meant the virtual disappearance of these forests and the Vega Baja del Segura Media, which have been replaced by wide expanses of reeds (Arundo donax).

Currently, the white poplar is protected by Decree 50/2003 and the category of "Special Interest."

The project includes the maintenance and irrigation of the trees to fall in order to secure its roots and development.

There is also provision in the context of the proposed creation of a tamarisk (Tamarix canariensis) in the lagoons of Campotéjar, proposed wetland as a wetland of international importance.
