About 20 people participated in the Volunteer Programme for Environmental Conservation of the River Segura of the Department of Environment of Molina de Segura (23/12/2008)

The Department of Environment of the City of Molina de Segura finished the second edition of its Environmental Volunteer Program, getting back the involvement of a group of citizens in the recovery of their environment.

This time the Environmental Volunteer Program has been dedicated to environmental recovery and improvement of the River Segura and its environment as it passes through Molina de Segura.

The activities are part of the Conservation and Enhancement Program Natural Ecosystems Segura River, which holds the Natural Environment Service of the Department of Environment, in collaboration with the Segura basin.

From May to November, for five weekends, 20 volunteers have completed training, and research and restoration of the river as it passes through Molina de Segura, increasing their knowledge about the natural values of the river and its surroundings, as well to acquire appropriate attitudes that contribute to the conservation of this natural area.

Some of the content addressed in the training activities have focused on the study of the characteristics and natural values of the River Segura, the birds of the river and its associated environment, the wildlife that inhabits it, its characteristic vegetation and traditional uses and recreational river and garden.

In terms of research and restoration, was the installation of nesting boxes in the Hijuela Soto, recognition of animal footprints and traces of riparian forest and wildlife watching Almadenes Canyon, environmental recovery and planting of trees in the Los Alamos Soto and research and survey of the ethnographic heritage connected to the river with a tour of the Vega del Segura on its way through Molina de Segura.

The activity has been most involved environmental remediation and planting of trees in the Los Alamos Soto in the Llano de Molina in which volunteers performed cleaning and planting of 70 trees native to shore.

The Councillor for the Environment, Consuelo Rosauro Meseguer, highlights "the importance of environmental volunteer program is within the Conservation Program and improving the river's natural ecosystem, and that knowledge and awareness of environmental and cultural values and involvement of citizens in their recovery, and contributes greatly facilitates our work in this program.

I want to thank the help of volunteers, who are an example for all citizens and a satisfaction to those who from our positions of responsibility trying to keep these projects. "
