The anthropometric study among school reflects a large decrease childhood obesity in Molina de Segura (26/03/2015)

The presentation of the evolution study of obesity and overweight in school Molina de Segura.

Anthropometric surveys 2007 and 2013, within the Program for Prevention of child and adolescent obesity Molina de Segura, sponsored by the Department of Health of the City molinense, took place on Thursday 26 March, in the Hall of City Hall.

Attended by the Mayor of the town, Eduardo Contreras Linares, Managing Murciano Health Service Area VI Director Salvador Tomás Fernández, and the Councillor for Health, José Antonio Carbonell Contreras.

To achieve the new anthropometric survey among schoolchildren in the municipality, has weighed and measured a total of 7,187 children and Primary Education of 3-12 years (83.65% of the electorate).

This second study has served to compare the evolution of childhood obesity with the first study in 2007 and, thus, to assess the impact of the many programs launched in Molina de Segura to curb the high rate of prevalence.

In 2007 the prevalence of childhood obesity was 16.3%.

This prevalence was at that time in line with regional and national data.

In the new study, it has been found that the prevalence has fallen to 12.5%, down 3.8%.

They have decreased the prevalence of overweight from 10.6% to 8.9% (-1.7%) and overweight (obesity + overweight) of 26.9% to 21.4% (-5.5 %).

Of Children and Adolescents The Molina de Segura Obesity Prevention Program began in 2006 and over the past nine years has carried out a comprehensive strategy to combat this serious health problem.

To develop the program a group of multidisciplinary work that currently consists of pediatricians, family physicians, nurses, health centers, nutritionists and experts from the departments of Health, Education and Sports, with the collaboration of professionals created the Departments of Health and Education of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.

The strategy has worked established different fronts that have attempted to improve the nutrition of children and promote their exercise.

It can be noted:

a) Intervention and change school menus, developing new ones based on the Mediterranean diet, consisting of salad, traditional single dish stew, bread and fruit.

In Molina de Segura 4,000 children eat every day in school canteen.

The menus have been accompanied by recommendations for breakfast, snacks and dinner.

b) Promoting healthy breakfasts and fruit consumption.

This intervention has joined forces schools themselves who have developed numerous actions autonomously and programs consumption of fruits of the Autonomous Community.

c) There have been various awareness campaigns among the population, as the campaign Do you want your children to be obese?

We propose a solution, or campaign Discover the treasure: discover healthy breakfast.

We have developed numerous health promotion activities among schoolchildren, as I'm contests cole best breakfast, workshops, games, theater, numerous lectures and courses with parents, specialist lectures to the public, etc.

d) They have several programs to promote physical activity, such as School Sport and Health, 5-10 Health Program, Young Actívate Program or Active-Families of the Ministry of Health program running.

In this school year there are 1,714 children enrolled in the activities planned exercise offered by the City of Molina de Segura.

In parallel to the anthropometric study was conducted a survey of habits in students from 5th Primary (11 years), which has indicated improvement in breakfast habits, an increase in the consumption of fruit and full breakfast ( milk, cereal and fruit).

The strategy initially promoted by the City of Molina de Segura and health centers in the municipality has joined numerous synergies, starting with the schools themselves, who have developed autonomously numerous performances, the ministries of Health and Education, the Hospital de Molina and the Foundation for Medical Research (FEM).

Although you can not establish a direct relationship between the development of all these actions and high decrease childhood obesity occurred in Molina de Segura, suspected interventions are working towards the goals that were designed.

Of Children and Adolescents The Molina de Segura Obesity Prevention Program obtained Naos 2009 the Ministry of Health Award to the best program of healthy eating in schools in Spain.

And Health Program 5-10 en2014 obtained the Award of Merit Deportivo de Murcia in Class I + D + i (Research + Development).
