Molina de Segura launches LIFE09/NAT/ES/000516 project activities for the conservation of the white-headed duck (25/02/2014)

The City of Molina de Segura and the Ministry of the Presidency of the Region of Murcia has launched this week activities 09/NAT/ES/000516 LIFE + project for the conservation of the White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala) in the Region of Murcia , the company contracted Ecoespuña, SL, and to be carried out for 5 months.

The LIFE Project are instruments of the European Union to fund conservation initiatives and environmental protection.

Specifically this project operates in the field of Nature (LIFE + Nature & Biodiversity Project: LIFE09/NAT/ES/000516), and its budget amounts to 1,342,000 euros for four years, of which 75% comes from European funds and 4.40% is contributed by the City of Molina de Segura.

The activities are framed in the 'Action D1' awareness and dissemination of LIFE + Nature and Biodiversity project, and develop programs for two different audiences:

1st Service Environmental Education Activities for Elementary Education schools, with approximately 3,600 students / as distributed in 15 public schools, 6 charter schools and 3 private schools, with a cost of € 14,918.

2nd Service Outreach and Environmental Awareness, targeting social organizations and other sectors of the local population of Molina de Segura, worth € 9,850.

The objectives of the service activities for schools are to promote the involvement of the school community and education professionals in the task of spreading the ecological, economic and cultural value of the wetland Campotéjar Las Lagunas de Molina de Segura and protected birds, especially the white-headed duck, and develop activities and knowledge of the species, such as audiovisual lectures, interpretative routes, monitoring activities and identifying birds, participation in habitat restoration work, etc..

As explained by the Councillor for the Environment and Urban, Juana Carrillo Muñoz, "the City Council intend, in a more direct way to involve citizens in environmental management of a natural area, providing outreach and environmental awareness of their ecological, directed at both schools as civic associations and the entire population. want inform, understand and engage the public in conservation molinense a fauna endangered species, the white-headed duck. The objectives of the program for citizen associations are closer to the population molinense environment of Las Lagunas de Campotéjar to show their biological cultural diversity, natural values ​​and involve social organizations in the enhancement and conservation of the wetland and its wildlife, especially the white-headed duck.

Knowledge of the activities and animal species in the area, such as audiovisual lectures, interpretative routes, monitoring activities and identifying birds, participation in habitat restoration work, guided tours, etc. will be developed.

The following activities will be developed:

Audiovisual presentations on the importance of the wetland of Las Lagunas de Campotéjar as protected habitat for waterfowl and / or endangered species such as the white-headed duck.

Guided by the wetland of Las Lagunas de Campotéjar for bird watching, with use observation equipment and guides, and the identification and cataloging of plant visits.

The white-headed duck is a bird that is endangered worldwide, and one of its largest populations found in The Lagoons Campotéjar, located in the town of Molina de Segura.

A semi-space since January 2011 is listed as a Ramsar site, or wetland of international importance, for their ecological values ​​for waterfowl.

The male of this species has a white head with a narrow black pileus, brownish neck and body, and a long tail that usually takes time bridal upright.

It feeds on seeds, vegetative parts of submerged plants and insect larvae.

Their preferred habitat is freshwater lakes or brackish water with a wide belt perilagoonal greenery and with a depth between 1.5 and 3 meters.

Campotéjar Lagoons, which are formed of five ponds of a former sewage lagoons, have hosted more than 10% of the population of the western Mediterranean headed duck.
