Project GreenWheel (13/05/2011)

GreenWheel is a project that began in October 2010 when a group of teachers and students of the IES Francisco de Goya attended the "Solar Race Murcia, which is a tournament of international character that is implanted in Spain, similar to the Shell Eco-Marathon.

The Shell Eco-Marathon is a competition that challenges teams of students from colleges and universities worldwide to design, build and test vehicles efficient energy standpoint.

The winner is the team that travels the greatest distance consuming less energy.

This event is also an excellent opportunity for participation for those current and future leaders who are passionate about seeking sustainable solutions to global energy challenge.

The Shell Eco-Marathon is a global initiative and acts are held in different parts of the world on the following dates:

Shell Eco-Marathon Americas: from 14 to 17 April in Houston, USA

Shell Eco-Marathon Europe: from 26 to 28 May in Lausitz, Germany

Shell Eco-Marathon Asia: from 6 to 9 July in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The purpose of our project is to create an electric vehicle energy efficient, using this activity as a future link between technical cooperation through the implementation of a real project on a topic of common interest to promote cooperation, mobility and innovation in matters of great interest and emerging innovative work, such as sustainable mobility and environmentally friendly vehicles.

We also aim to promote research-oriented attitude among the various departments involved in order to adapt teaching methods to respond effectively and contribute to the development of our students.

It is a comprehensive engineering project, which covers the design, construction, and assembly of all necessary components of a prototype and is being conducted entirely by students and teachers in professional departments Vehicle Maintenance, Electricity and Electronics.

The group consists of students and teachers and has a wide range of partners and technical advisors.

Among the group of people that make up the team and collaborate in developing the first prototype we have an engineer in Automation, a physicist, a telecommunications engineer, a computer, a number of Electrical and Electronics Technicians, a welding technology and materials, and numerous contacts in the business world and the university.

In just a few months to create the number of stakeholders to participate has tripled.

Objective of value added is the international and multicultural broadcasting, offering the opportunity to demonstrate and test the technological innovation against teams from other countries in an environment of camaraderie.

With these vehicles, each school will participate in the races that are organized for that purpose in Spain (Murcia Region Solar Race) and Europe (Shell Eco-marathon) and other outreach events and exhibition, which will participate both teachers and students.

In addition, to promote exchange of experiences, especially during competitions.

It should highlight the importance of communication and social involvement and media coverage with these events.

In this first year the project is very ambitious, as envisaged, in a few months, build a fuel-efficient vehicle to compete with other institutes, universities and companies across Europe, some with many years of experience in this type of competitions.

The short term goal is in the last week of May and will participate in the 27th edition of the Shell Eco-Marathon.

The objective of this race is to bring together students from different universities and institutes around the world with prototypes designed and built by themselves.

The prototypes have to travel some distance to a fixed volume of fuel or stored energy, the winner is the one that consumes less energy.

There is an equivalence between different types of fuel.

There are two categories: Prototypes and Urban concept, being able to use different energy sources.

Vehicles with internal combustion engines can use gasoline, diesel, gas liquid (GTL), biodiesel (FAME) or ethanol.

The leading electric motors can use hydrogen technology, solar or rechargeable batteries.

The category "rechargeable", which involved car show is now a separate category with 29 participants from 12 countries.

In the 2010 edition held four tests: Europe, UK, USA and Asia.

Applicants exceed the equipment selection process prior, which we evaluate the soundness and originality of the project among others.

We have already been selected from among 222 teams from across Europe to the 2011 edition.

The prototypes offer the least drag, so they are very aerodynamic, with the lowest possible weight and minimal friction, their engines are optimized to the maximum to have the lowest.

They have achieved many important milestones in the long history of Eco-marathon.

European event in 2010, established the record of the longest distance traveled by the equivalent of a liter of fuel, with an astonishing 4896.1 miles.

Week 26 to 28 May at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz in Germany in the 27th edition of the Shell Eco-marathon Europe, more than 3,000 students and teachers of colleges and universities, engineers, young and enthusiasts from 26 countries across Europe we will test our ingenuity.

We have spent months and days and nights dreaming, designing and building futuristic cars fantastic, with a sole purpose of making the longest route with the least amount of fuel.

Among them are 20 Spanish teams, of which 5 are is Murcia.

We all have in common the passion for design and desire to expand the boundaries of efficiency in fuel consumption.
