Develop the LIFE + project for the conservation of white-headed duck in the wetlands of Lakes Campotéjar (02/02/2011)

The introduction of Project LIFE + Nature and Biodiversity Conservation of the white-headed duck has taken place on Wednesday 2 February, in the wetlands of Lakes Campotéjar of Molina de Segura.

The event was attended by the Mayor of the town, Eduardo Contreras Linares, the Minister of Agriculture and Water in the Region of Murcia, Antonio Cerdá Cerdá, the Director General of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, Pablo Fernández Abellán, and the Councillor for the Environment, Consuelo Rosauro Meseguer.

The Project LIFE + Nature and Biodiversity Conservation of the white-headed duck was presented to the European Union by the Ministry of Agriculture and Water in the Region of Murcia, head and receiving coordinator, and involves as beneficiaries associated municipalities of Mazarron, Alhama de Murcia and Molina de Segura, which account for 4.4% of total investment.

The EU subsidizes 75% of the total project for conservation actions and management of habitats where they live and the ruddy duck nests, as well as environmental education and dissemination of the project among the population.

The total amounts to 1,342,103 euros and the project implementation period is 47 months between January 2011 and September 2014.

Among the actions to be undertaken include the improvement of the optimal habitat for the reproduction of the white-headed duck, endangered species living in the wetlands of Lakes Campotéjar, Las Lagunas de Mazarrón and Alhama de Murcia.

Another action is to reconcile biodiversity conservation with agricultural use of water stored in lakes.

The Lagoons Wetland Campotéjar de Molina de Segura is classified as artificial wetland ponds or lagoons fill 5 of what was the old wastewater treatment plant lagoons of the town (with an area of about 225,000 m2), built in Campotéjar hamlet in the early 90's, and that malfunction was abandoned in 2002 when they built the current WWTP / Norte de Molina de Segura.

This neglect and the passage of time was naturalizing this space, being attractive to a large number of migratory waterfowl in their seasonal steps from Africa to Europe and vice versa.

One of the components of biodiversity of wetlands that has traditionally received most attention were the birds.

For several years the city of Molina de Segura has been carrying out research and dissemination of ecological values of this wetland, as well as patrol and maintenance.

The ponds were visited Campotéjar scientifically for the first time April 14, 2004, as part of the study and characterization of wetlands in the town of Molina de Segura, conducted by the Department of Environment, and completed in 2005 with documentation of 15 wetlands, including the Wetland Lagoons Campotéjar.

This study demonstrated the importance of this wetland to regional and national level, with the presence of numerous migratory waterfowl protection included in catalogs.

Among them: the marbled teal, the Squacco and the bird emblem, the white-headed duck.

Other protected birds are: egret, common curlew, black-winged stilt, avocet common sandpiper bastard, Whiskered Tern, Black Tern and Common Tern.

White-headed duck is a duck diver medium size and weight (43/48 cm. Length, 62/70 cm. Wingspan, and 471/865 gr. Weight), larger in males than in females.

Presents a large head with a prominent peak and a long tail (8 / 10 cm.) Usually stands upright, a characteristic that has given the generic name erect tail duck.

The plumage is usually brown / ochraceous to brown / red with different shades.

Adult males have a great amount of pure white on the head and during the breeding season, their peak is blue.

In a recount at the beginning of September 2005 are counted more than 200 specimens of white-headed duck.

And he notes that one of the couples have had children, something unlikely in the Region of Murcia.

Molina de Segura is the first municipality in the Region of Murcia where it has been found breeding in this species.

Concentrations of waterfowl census in this wetland make Campotéjar Lagoons in the second largest continental wetland in Murcia, concentrations during winter and migration paths of waterfowl, surpassed only by the reservoir Santomera.

While for the set of all wetlands in our region, ranked fourth in importance.

In 2009, the autonomous processes the LIFE + project, with funding from the City molinense.

Later that year, the City employs 15 workers, who make up a brigade to perform environmental work to improve the environment of the lakes.

In 2010, we continue to work to improve the 15 workers until 30 June.

And, in parallel with the actions of management and conservation of this wetland, the City has spent several years working with communication programs, environmental education and outreach around streams and wetlands in the county, targeting the population to increase change in perception of these ecosystems, and achieve awareness in society about the need for its conservation.

The LIFE + is a financial instrument of the European Union for the Protection of the environment, key to moving towards sustainable development of the EU.

Co-finances actions in favor of the environment in the European Union in three areas: LIFE + Nature and Biodiversity, LIFE + Environment Policy and Governance and LIFE + Information and Communication.

The goal of nature and biodiversity is to protect, conserve, restore, monitor and facilitate the functioning of natural systems, natural habitats and wildlife, with the aim of halting biodiversity loss.
