Ecologists in Action report an illegal dump near Campotejar gaps. (22/12/2010)

Ecologists in Action has denounced a new illegal dumping in the region.

This time the landfill is located in the town of Molina de Segura, between the Industrial Base 2000 and the Rambla del Salar Gordo.

The environmental organization says that "the landfill is located next to the Rambla del Gordo Salar and Lagunas de Campotejar, recently proposed a wetland as a Ramsar site (1) for the region."

Indeed, the spirit of the Ramsar Convention is to protect natural wetlands and their ecological values of the degradation by human action.

This wetland is a wintering, migration and reproduction of many species of waterfowl and other species associated with these habitats, among which stands out for its global threat level of the breeding population of White-headed Duck.

From Ecologists in Action reported that "the landfill area consists of salt marsh vegetation has been affected by land filled first, and the rubble and all sorts of waste, then"

In the landfill, they explain, "can be found from inert to hazardous waste, spread over an area of approximately 55,000 m2.

Abundance explain, "the rubble, along with household goods, plastics, electronic equipment, appliances, cement (containing asbestos), tires, mineral oil, car parts, etc.."

The environmentalist organization regrets that "next to a wetland of this size have an illegal dump for years, and particularly given the indifferent and indolent municipality and autonomous region which, while calling for international recognition of the wetland, it saves the gradual deterioration himself and his environment "

And remember that illegal dumps and generate significant environmental degradation of its environment, pose other substantial risks from the point of view of health and fire occurrence.

The complaint has been lodged with the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, the Department of Nature Protection of the Guardia Civil (Seprona), the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) and the town of Molina de Segura.

(1) The inclusion of a wetland in the Ramsar Convention list represents the international recognition of its importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat.

The agreement, signed in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar is an international treaty that aims at the conservation and wise use of wetlands through national action and through intergovernmental cooperation.

Spain acceded to the Convention in 1982.
