On the other side, Eusebio, a clerk in a canning factory, accompanies his mother-in-law, Carmen, who is terminally ill during her summer vacation.

Advised by Josema, an enthusiastic bookseller of the poems of Rainer Maria Rilke, Eusebio writes everything that Carmen is telling him.

According to what Josema says, what she writes will be for her mother-in-law "like that little breath that encourages the flame of the patient's life".

And so, the novel will pass between the resistant skepticism of Eusebio and the easy credulity of Josema.

The most trivial issues of Carmen's life are for the author of El otro lado pretext and argument of the great question of life: death, the meaning of existence, immortality, the hereafter ... Throughout the book, the protagonist will do nothing but turn into question the incipit of Lord Byron with which begins the story of the other side: "Is there pleasure in the woods without paths, / ecstasy on the lonely shore?".

Everyone's question, the usual question.

That question that only death will be able to answer.
