March 12: International Glaucoma Day (09/03/2018)

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), glaucoma is the second common cause of blindness and, currently, 4.5 million people suffer from it all over the world.

The forecast is that this figure will increase to 11 million affected by 2020.

In the Region of Murcia, at least 4% of the population suffers from this ocular disease that produces a progressive atrophy of the optic nerve, which causes a progressive decrease in the visual field.

On the occasion of the International Glaucoma Day (March 12), the Ophthalmology Service of the Hospital de Molina stresses the importance of prevention through annual reviews, especially after 40 years - with the specialist "to detect changes in the optic nerve or in the visual field, in order to apply the corresponding treatment and stop the progressive progression of glaucoma, for this the tension is lowered, the vascularization is improved and the risk of optic nerve atrophy is reduced, "they affirm from the Hospital Service.

There are several types of glaucoma: some associated with eye strain;

others, to some diseases;

and even, juvenile and infantile glaucoma.

Regarding acute glaucoma, the Ophthalmology Service of Hospital de Molina states that it does not show symptoms: "When the ocular tension is between 22-30, it does not hurt, but there comes a time when lateral visual field is lost, which implies that let's see less on the sides - and until it is not very lost, the person does not usually notice, if it is not detected in time, glaucoma can produce absolute blindness. "

The Ophthalmology Service of Hospital de Molina ensures that the evolution of glaucoma can be controlled and the lost visual field can be replaced.

Therefore, early diagnosis plays an important role.

The sooner it is located, the better.
