Depression, central theme of World Health Day (05/04/2017)

Depression is one of the most common diseases worldwide, and is estimated to affect more than 300 million people.

The psychologist at the Hospital de Molina, Mariola García, stresses that "more than causes of depression, we speak of different risk factors that increase the chances of a person suffering from this disease, such as biological, personal and environmental factors. , If parents or siblings have suffered from depression, they can increase their risk of developing depression by as much as 30%, and people with chronic diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or cancer are also more likely to have it. "

A study published in the American Journal BMC Medicine, concludes that there is a higher prevalence of cases of depression in rich countries.

For example, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), 20% of people living in Spain have suffered mental disorders at some point in their lives.

In particular, women have twice the incidence of men.

The psychologist at Hospital de Molina recommends an adequate comprehensive medical treatment, based on psychotherapy (cognitive-behavioral therapy) and a pharmacological treatment when necessary, in order to significantly improve the quality of life and prognosis of patients.
