Students of the CEIP Cervantes de Molina de Segura learn to compost to use it in their school garden (21/10/2019)

The Department of Environment of the City of Molina de Segura has launched a pilot project of School Composting of Bio-waste in the CEIP Cervantes.

The students of the center will learn to value the organic waste generated in the center for use in their school garden.

The Project, framed in the PIMA-Residuos and PEMAR 2017 call, co-financed by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the City of Molina de Segura, has the collaboration of the Ministry of Employment, Universities, Business and Environment of the Region of Murcia and CEBAS-CISC, through the Enzymology and Organic Bioremediation Research Group of Soils and Organic Waste directed by Dr. Carlos García Izquierdo.

Its main objective is to make students aware of the real possibility of comprehensively recycling household waste;

Learn that its organic part (very important fraction in relation to all household waste), can be valued by obtaining, through a simple process, a quality organic fertilizer (compost) to use it, in this experience, in your school garden.

For this, the City Council has installed a special composter in the school garden of CEIP Cervantes that will allow them to prepare a compost of guaranteed quality through a training and monitoring service offered by the specialist in the field, María Jesús Medina González, who , in collaboration with CEBAS-CISC, will allow an analysis of the quality of the product obtained and advise on the best way to use it.

After a previous training action directed to the teachers of the center, all the students attended last week to activities in which they have been shown, in a practical and very funny way, what is composting, how to do it in the center and the importance of recycling our household waste.

The activities with the students take place on October 21, 22 and 23, with two sessions per day.

Each of these sessions is adapted to the different levels from Infant Education to 6th grade of Primary School.

With the little ones, the information and motivation to participate in the composting project is done through a storyteller, where a microorganism, a farmer, a scientist and a carrot plant explain to the little ones what waste is necessary for Be able to make a good compost.

With the elders, the same characters inform and motivate them to participate in the project in a fun way, informing them of the processes that microorganisms carry out on the organic matter in nature, the transformations that they cause with their action, their new composter, its implementation and operation.

The Department of Environment, through this project, intends that the entire educational community of this center (teachers, mother and father school children and non-teaching staff), be aware of the importance of recycling the organic fraction of our household waste, how simple it can be, of the environmental benefit that it entails, and, on a practical level, of obtaining a quality fertilizer that can be used without problem in the school garden.
