The Fatima District will benefit from the European URBACT program that promotes sustainable urban development (31/07/2019)

Molina de Segura is one of the 17 Spanish municipalities that participate in the URBACT III program, a set of exchange and learning activities, financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF), which promotes urban development integrated sustainable, within the framework of the Europe 2020 strategy.

This program, in which the City of Molina de Segura participates as a partner in a project led by the City of Milan, has been presented today at a press conference by the Mayor, Esther Clavero Mira, and the European Project Coordinator of the Molinense town hall Antonio Gomariz Pastor.

URBACT III seeks that the cities involved can work together to solve urban problems and share good practices, lessons and solutions with all the agents involved in the creation of urban policies.

The program contributes to achieving the goals of Europe 2020 by providing a mechanism for the different urban agents involved in the development and implementation of urban policies to develop their skills and knowledge.

The resulting learning will contribute to creating more vibrant and resilient cities by addressing a broad spectrum of emerging issues linked to smart, sustainable and inclusive growth (the three priorities of Europe 2020).

The project in which the Molinense town hall, called Cities4CRS, is involved will develop comprehensive municipal strategies to foster and stimulate corporate responsibility in urban areas, specifically the Fatima District in the Molinense case.

The partners with whom Molina de Segura will work are Sofia and Vratsa in Bulgaria, Nantes Metropole in France, Rijeka in Croatia, Budaors in Hungary, Kekava in Latvia, Guimarães in Portugal and Bratislava in Slovakia.

The partners must develop a Comprehensive Action Plan (MYP) and will have the opportunity to test some small-scale solutions or tactics in the city, developing skills on integral and participatory urban planning.

The MYP that the City of Molina de Segura will design for the Fatima Neighborhood will be a model of joint effort between the municipality and the companies involved to improve the area through innovation, through social and economic participation and to regenerate green areas and the urban environment.

The initiative includes the development of a draft public-private partnership and collaboration to design interventions in the field of urban regeneration in the Fatima neighborhood, within a European context and innovative environment, so that the organizational model created can be applied in another cities.

The project will establish a connection with the Molina de Segura economic promotion fair park by providing an opportunity to link it to the future development of the area.

The special interest of this public-private collaboration in the area is social awareness and the association between citizens, businesses and local administration to join efforts in urban and social regeneration.

The first phase of the project, which will be developed from September 2019 to March 2020, has a global budget of 149,903, 31 euros.

In this phase, Molina de Segura has 14,502.91 euros to finance the preparatory activities of the URBACT Local Group and the progress of the Comprehensive Action Plan (MYP).

ERDF will finance 12,327.47 euros (85%) and the City Council € 2,175.44 (15%).

Cities4CRS is a project developed during the first four months of 2019, called "Comprehensive municipal strategies to promote and stimulate corporate responsibility in urban areas".

This project seeks to improve and increase municipal, business and civil society capacities to have instruments that allow addressing emerging social needs at the local level through the creation of social innovations resulting from new models of public-private partnerships.

The Mayor, Esther Clavero Mira, explained that "it is not about initiatives or isolated, impulsive or short-term activities. The City Council is determined to lead a proposal to change the city model, which must be carried out with the participation of all sectors, so that our urban development is precisely sustainable, integrated, inclusive and at the service of a better quality of life for all Moline citizens. "

Clavero has specified that it is the first time that the City of Molina de Segura has prepared a bid to attend the URBACT program, and the first one has been selected to participate in this Cities4CSR Network.

In Molina de Segura, actions and planning, comprehensive and coordinated, are being implemented in neighborhoods, urban areas or industrial areas, such as the Molina Sur Master Plan, San Roque Neighborhood regeneration, Promotion of industrial areas, New fairground, commercial area from the Barrio Centro, and now the Fatima neighborhood with the Cities4CSR Network, among other actions.

All these actions, together with the recent implementation of the ERDF support to co-finance part of the DUSI strategy, represent an important turning point in the municipal commitment to sustainability, which requires the involvement of Molina de Segura in new initiatives related to sustainable and integrated development.
