The Environmental Volunteering ProgramVoluntari @ s Naturalmente !, promoted by the Department of Environment of the City of Molina de Segura, held last Saturday June 29 the last activity of the course, aimed at the fight against invasive exotic vegetation in the areas green of the city of Molina de Segura.

A dozen volunteers took a tour of the parks and gardens of the eastern part of the town, identifying and locating some exotic species with invasive potential such as the Ailanto (Ailanthus altissima) or the Spanish Banderita (Lantana camara), whose location, Together with the suggestions of the volunteers themselves, they were transferred to the Department of the Environment.

This action was intended to pay special attention to the fight against invasive alien species, which becomes fundamental to stop the loss of biodiversity, and the role that we as citizens can exercise from the cities to prevent their spread to natural areas.

The Environmental Volunteer Program closes the 2018/19 academic year, in which activities have been carried out to disseminate and attract volunteers, training and awareness activities about the work to be carried out and concrete actions, in which volunteering has been implicated in research, restoration, maintenance or information activities and awareness of the environment.

The most outstanding actions of this edition of the program were the following: plantations carried out in the Vicente Blanes Ecological Park or in the groves of the Segura River, with a hundred planted trees and shrubs;

the installation and revision of nest boxes in Las Lagunas de Campotéjar and in El Soto de la Hijuela;

evaluation and improvement of natural trails, such as the Rambla del Chorro or the green La Fuente corridor, with a total of 5 km.

evaluated;

study and monitoring of fauna in the Vicente Blanes Park;

study of local arboreal heritage, with the location of 4 specimens (mulberry, fig, pine and cypress) that met the characteristics for inclusion in the catalog as singular trees;

planting and conditioning of the botanical corner of autochthonous vegetation of the Parque de la Compañía, where cleaning, clearing, conditioning and planting of species native to the Mediterranean pine, such as black hawthorn, mastic, white rock, were carried out , juniper and myrtle;

information and awareness on the separation of waste;

elimination of invasive vegetation in Soto de la Hijuela, such as cane, and exotic plants, such as elm pumila;

and identification of invasive vegetation in the green areas of the city.

The Councilor for the Environment, Mariano Vicente Albaladejo, thanks "all the volunteers who have participated in this program, their involvement and contribution to the dissemination of the environmental values ​​of the municipality and their collaboration in the conservation of our natural spaces and in the improvement of the urban environment ".

In September the activities will be resumed with new proposals to encourage citizens of Molina de Segura to know and collaborate in the enhancement and conservation of the local environment.
