The Environmental Volunteering Program Volunteers Naturally !, promoted by the Department of the Environment of the Molina de Segura City Council, offers an activity of identification of native and alien species in the green areas of the city of Molina de Segura, which will have place on Saturday, June 29, at 10.00.

Volunteers will be offered a brief training on the problem of invasive exotic vegetation, some clues will be given for their identification and, later, a tour of several green areas of Molina de Segura will be carried out to transfer to the Department of the Environment. the location of existing specimens.

The fight against invasive alien species is fundamental, since they are one of the main causes of biodiversity loss worldwide.

In addition, the development of actions in urban environments is very important since it acts on one of the invasion routes.

The parks and gardens improve the environmental conditions of the city and also increase the quality of physical and mental life of its inhabitants.

A large part of the species used in gardens and parks are exotic, that is, from other regions of the Earth.

From the landscaped areas they can escape and colonize the natural spaces, competing with the native species and threatening the diversity of the ecosystems and the services they offer.

These are called Invasive Exotic Species and have become a problem for natural spaces and for the unique and varied flora and fauna they support.

On the other hand, the incorporation of autochthonous vegetation to these spaces contributes to the conservation of the natural heritage and biodiversity and is a sustainable option, since these species have a lower water requirement.

With this activity, the Environmental Volunteer Program closes the 2018/19 course, thanking all the volunteers who have participated in its involvement and contribution to the dissemination of the municipality's environmental values.

In the month of September the activities will be resumed with new proposals to encourage citizens of Molina de Segura to know and collaborate in the enhancement and conservation of the environment.
