David Hume and John Stuart Mill on the meaning of religion

As a fundamental issue in the lives of human beings, religion has been and continues to be the subject of analysis and discussion.

The need to respond to the last questions of our existence has made the religious discourse remain solid despite the many controversies raised in recent centuries.

David Hume and John Stuart Mill are two good examples of thinkers who have analyzed religion from the critical perspective of modernity.

Both authors carried out profound and erudite reflections that still maintain their influence today.

This work shows both this interest, and the considerations on theological or doctrinal issues that the two philosophers made following their examination of religious discourse.

Hume and Mill were also committed witnesses of their time.

Hume, an enlightened Scot who was suspicious of the traditional approaches of a society in changing uses.

Mill, implacable critic of social limitations, and defender of causes as just and noble as little recognized in the English political arena, which even went so far as to outline a proposal of religion to the human measure.
