The Environmental Volunteering Program Volunteers Naturally !, promoted by the Department of Environment of the City of Molina de Segura, held on Saturday October 27, an activity of elimination of invasive and exotic species in the Segura River with the participation of 11 volunteers.

During the activity, the volunteers were able to learn about the species that populate the riverbank vegetation of the Segura River, learning to identify those exotic and invasive species that threaten their conservation.

Tree improvement work was carried out on specimens of tamarisk, ash, elm and hackberry and elimination of invasive plant species, such as cane, and exotic species, such as elm pumila.

Finally, the irrigation outlet of the intervened area was cleaned to make use of its water for irrigation.

This activity is part of the actions of the Program for the Conservation and Improvement of Natural Ecosystems of the Segura River, which has been developed by the City of Molina since 2000 and which has contributed to an ecological recovery of the groves of the Segura River, increasing its biodiversity, maintaining the presence of many animal species, some of them with great relevance and interest as the otter, reducing the risk of floods, and providing the public with an environment of great beauty and place of rest and recreation, with the possibility of numerous activities such as hiking, nature tourism and environmental education.

The Councilor for the Environment, Juan Alcaide Quirós, thanked the participants for their collaboration in this activity, with which they had the opportunity to improve a space of vital importance in the municipality, such as the Segura River, contributing to the enrichment of its biodiversity and participating in its protection.

The activities of this program take place on the last Saturday of each month and are aimed at all those over 14 years old interested in the conservation of natural areas and the improvement of the municipality.

Prior registration is required, which can be done through the website of the City Council www.molinadesegura.es, or by email voluntariadoambiental@molinadesegura.es.
