The Molina de Segura City Council meets with other local governments of Andalusia and the Region of Murcia to design participatory democracy initiatives and open government (21/09/2018)

The Molina de Segura City Council has met with other local governments of Andalusia and the Region of Murcia to design training initiatives for participatory democracy and open government.

The working session, held on Thursday, September 20 in the Citizen Participation Area of the City of Malaga, has brought together 15 local governments of Andalusia and the Region of Murcia, and has served to define the objectives and agenda of the RUTA SUR initiative , started in 2017.

This action proposal aims to contribute to the collaborative generation of knowledge among the actors involved in participatory processes: policy makers, technical personnel and citizens.

As explained by the Councilor for Citizen Participation of the City of Murcia de Segura, Pedro Jesus Martinez Baños, "this network of municipalities will contribute to consolidate the participatory processes that have been taking place in the different town halls, thus reducing the distance between citizenship and administration. aims to integrate citizenship into political management and it is important to create a political agenda where participation remains beyond the conjunctural changes and where formulas are sought to mainstream citizen participation, Ruta Sur proposes channels of relationship and communication between local governments, academic entities and social organizations for debate, training and exchange for participatory democracy ".

Throughout the training events held during the last quarter of 2017 and first semester of 2018 in the cities of Córdoba, Málaga and Molina de Segura, Ruta Sur brought together more than 30 local governments and around 75 social organizations, academic entities and collective citizens of four autonomous communities (Andalusia, Region of Murcia, Extremadura, and Castilla La Mancha).

In total, more than 300 participants have shared this learning and exchange experience on local participation policies.

In addition to the entities originally driving the initiative, other local governments (up to 15 in total) have come together to learn about the principles, objectives and planning of Ruta Sur actions.

Throughout the day an agenda of events and seminars of different kinds was drawn up, going from the social and solidarity economy and citizen participation to other topics, such as citizen laboratories, citizen debt audit, cooperativism and participation, and even a Spanish-Portuguese meeting on participatory democracy and participatory budgets between the regions of Andalusia and the Alentejo.

The meeting concluded with the intention of continuing to shape the formation and exchange meetings of participatory democracy policies and create an agenda of events covering the coming months of 2018 and the first semester of 2019.
