The Social Welfare Department of Molina de Segura organizes chess workshops aimed at minors at risk of social exclusion (31/05/2018)

The Department of Social Welfare of the City of Molina de Segura has organized chess workshops for children in situations of vulnerability or risk of social exclusion, aimed at children aged 6 to 18, belonging to families served by the various programs of the council.

The purpose of these workshops is to promote and encourage playful activities and, at the same time, to exercise mental faculties with the benefits that this brings, such as working and improving basic executive functions.

They will be taught by Javier Portillo Castellón, responsible for the company Ajedrez Fácil, belonging to the Spanish Chess Federation (FEDA).

The project has a cost of 995 euros.

The sessions will be held every Friday, in the facilities of the Integra Service, next to the National Police Station, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm, from June 1 to September 2018. Regarding the methodology , will be held in 90 minute sessions, in which the first 30 minutes will be theory, and the remaining 60 minutes will be practice on a wall board, physical board, projector, giant board or computers.

According to the Councilor for Social Welfare, Angel Navarro Garcia, "the City of Molina de Segura opts to implement a new strategy that is the practice of the game of chess as a tool to encourage the cognitive development of children, the promotion of strategic mathematics, mental concentration, individual work and reflection, etc. In this way, the Department of Social Welfare joins the new initiative of other sectors, such as youth and education, to implement chess activities as a way of encourage constructive leisure and optimal development of social skills and management of skill situations, applicable in other areas of daily life.

The monitor Javier Portillo Castellón is endorsed by his participation in the implementation of this action in other groups of special needs belonging to marginal neighborhoods of other countries (Brazil) and other urban centers (Barrio del Espiritu Santo de Espinardo), with very favorable results.
